- J/S and I went to see the new Robin Hood movie. J/S and I shared the following bottom line opinion: If you want to go see a Ridley Scott "medieval" movie don't pay full price but see it at a matinee. Even if you ignore some of the wacko "medieval" stuff on screen (Steampunk fashion in the middle ages! Amphibious landing craft! (that launched from what, exactly?)) the script/editing is just so diffuse that we never connected with the story/characters. Even the fight scenes seemed diffuse. And note that I'll see a "medieval" movie just because it is that and I want Hollywood to make more, so I'm giving this movie more slack than I think the avreage viewer would. So, not a movie that I left feeling like "I'll never get those 2 hours back", but not one I'm going to see again. I'll have to re-watch the director's cut version of Kingdom of Heaven again now...

- In the last week I've made 3 loaves of bread. No, I shouldn't be eating it. but J/S does eat bread, for sandwiches and such, and ya know? Bread is stupidly expensive at the store for what you get! The first loaf I made was the one on the back of the King Arthur Flour Whole Wheat bag. It's no knead -- you just mix it all together, pour it in a pan (it's pretty sticky), let it rise once for 90 min, then bake. Voila, you have %100 Wheat Bread! Yesterday I tried the basic white bread from the Baking With Julia book. This recipe has 2 rises, but I used my old heavy-duty Kitchen Aide mixer w/dough hook for 10 min instead of hand kneeding for that long (which was a method listed in the book), so it was easier than it could have been. And you know what? I took the loaves out of the oven and they looked so perfect they looked fake. :-) J/S said they were good. I did have some warm (who could resist?) but I should *not* be eating it.
Anyway, I worked it out and I think these white loaves come out to something like $1.50 per loaf, which is a big discount over what you pay in the stores these days. Of course, a big issue is *time*. I just happened to have yesterday morning free so I could bake bread. Not something I can count on on a weekly basis.

- I love Brandee; nothing new there ;-) . She's still getting hives on and off, and she's got a runny nose, so I'm pretty sure she's suffering from allergies along with the rest of us. Saturday she took her first lay-down nap in the outdoor arena this year, then we had a nice ride -- she does like her siestas in the sunshine. ;-) Yesterday J/S had a first in that he chased her around the outdoor arena and got her to trot around. Next step is getting him to lunge her in the roundpen. No money to spare to get him on a horse right now, though. :-(
My riding has its ups and downs. Some days I think I rock and sometimes I think I'll never overcome my lack of physical abililty and talent for this sport. :-/ But I know how lucky I am to have Brandee, and that helps keep me going.

- Life is good with my sweetie, but times are super tight financially. (Note: No, we aurguably shouldn't have splurged for the RH movie. But, believe me, we needed the mental health break, so it was worth the $, IMO). Really watching the gas money right now, and the money available for SCA events. We're still planning on going to Grand Thing over Memorial Day, though, especially because we've got to retrieve some more stuff from Portland. We will have to use his car, though, and not the van, so I still don't see clearly how this is all going to happen/work out. :-/

- Last but not least, Happy Birthday to Leohtulf and Leticia! And Happy Birthday to all you other May babies as well. :-)

I haven't actually looked at the book myself, but my sister bought my step sister a book containing bread recipes which call for only five minutes of your time a day, and my step sister said she loves the bread.

The description on the web page makes it sound similar to what I've been doing for years--I make up a full batch of dough (only I knead mine the old-fashioned way) and then keep it in the fridge. Each day I break off a hand-full of dough, shape it into a small roll, and bake in a toaster oven for 15 minutes--I get all the joy of fresh bread, straight out of the oven, baked in the time it takes to get dressed and get ready to head out the door in the morning, and I'm not tempted to eat too much at once, since I only bake a single serving.

My housemate Marie told me about the book too (a friend of hers has it). Sounds like a really good idea. :-)

Um. Would you like to trade cars for Memorial day weekend? I'm not going anywhere, and you could probably fit more stuff in the sub...

Wow, thank you for your generous offer! But J/S and I talked it over this morning, and we decided that we really didn't have the money to go to Grand Thing (especially since I will have to shell out $1200 for dental work soon, and we are comitted to going to West/An Tir War). So we decided to stay home Memorial Day weekend. :-/

Well, I'm sorry you won't be going, but on the plus side, more Brandee time! :->
