OK, You all *knew* I was going to see this movie opening weekend, right? :-)
I went to this movie because it starred a paint horse and Viggo M.; anything in addition to that (like, say a plot) was just gravy. Honestly, I would have gone if it was just Viggo reading names in a phone book and the paint pawing out the phone numbers.
What can I say, this is a very silly movie. If you aren't a big horse and/or Viggo fan you might want to go to a matinee. The movie works best when it's in updated Trigger and Roy Roger's mode: Hidalgo puts Frank's hat on him when he's drunk, horse unties self to save hero, much more fun stuff, and Viggo/Frank utters the ultimate compliment to a lady: "My horse likes you". On the minus side, the writers knew that a horse race in the desert would be boring to watch for long (How many scenes can you have of Viggo on a Paint in the desert, really? They try them all--over dunes, over cracked earth, in sileoette, you name it, they shot it.) So the movie takes some left turns, and has probably one too many sub-themes. But it's fun, and at least it comes off as a fresh interpretation of known theme. And again, Viggo is really good as the new Gary Cooper.
Oh, and Viggo gets *way* better hair in this movie than in LOTRs. Jeeze, it is clearly the case that even people riding in the desert through sand storms get better hair than the men in Middle Earth. Another funny thing: Poor Vigo is not allowed to make a movie unless he: 1) rides a horse; 2) speaks in a foreign language while subtitles are shown, and 3) sings.
Don't get me wrong, it was a fun movie and I enjoyed it. Maestrateresa is right, *serious* eye candy.
