A shout-out to my An Tir Friends :-)
Jul. 15th, 2009 12:11 amOK, I know that the 2010 West/An Tir War is a whole year away. But I'd like to get in contact/start networking with An Tirians that are fond of the 16th C and would be interested in the the 16th C Theme Day/Salon (see previous posts). Down here in the West we've got our own informal group of Usual Suspects (or, and Ivar might say, our own local branch of the 16th C Illuminati ;-) ), and I can easily think of Westerners who I could hit up to teach and/or head up activities. But, obviously, this should be a joint West/An Tir effort. Besides, when else can we all be in the same place at the same time to play? :-) .
So, my dear An Tir friends, if you are interested let me know. If you know someone who you think might be interested, please let them know that a 16th C day will happen at the War. If you or they want to know more they can email me (tlwhyte@comcast.net), and if we get enough interest maybe I'll set up a yahoo group for planning.
Also, the next time I'll be in An Tir will be Sport of Kings and I'd love to talk about this in person to any interested parties. (I acknowledge that SoK will not be the best place for this, given the focus of the event may not draw the 16th C crowd, and even if it does attendees will probably have too much on thier mental plate already to contemplate a 16th C activity that is about a year in the future. :-0 But, what the heck, anything's possible.
;-) ).
Just trying to reach out and make this a joint Kingdom project. :-)

Date: 2009-07-15 02:57 pm (UTC)so how long a class would you be willing to attend to get to taste? cuz it takes time to cook stuff but if you're not cooking (and I could likely teach you if you wanted :) all my classes work great for beginners!) you might get bored watching the rest of us have fun :)
also, what culture/cusinie do you think would be most interesting to people?? english? french? low countries/german? italian? middle eastern?

Date: 2009-07-15 03:03 pm (UTC)I'll eat just about anything... England, France and Italy are the areas culturally that I'm most interested in.

Date: 2009-07-15 03:20 pm (UTC)a class perhaps that is an intro to 16th c. foods you can make at events... hands on (I find thats the best way to get your feet wet...having someone right there in case you get stuck)... make yourself lunch....
shhh...dont tell anyone but period food is actually pretty easy to make once you learn how. they didnt use super complicated techniques and the 16th c. spicing palate is actually alot simpler than the medieval one! :D
one of my standbys now is a 16th c. german recipe. put halved hard boiled eggs on a plate. dress with vinegar, coarse salt and chopped parsley.
thats it! tada! :D

Date: 2009-07-15 03:38 pm (UTC)Sounds good, although if attendees are Dressed Up it might be a bit difficult for them. :-) Hm, maybe I can bring a bunch of aprons...
Other possibilites could be a talk**/tasting on what sets 16th C European cuisine apart from what went before and what comes after. Or a survey of what different countries are doing ("best of" recipes, perhalps). Definately want to stress the Hey You Can Do This Yourself aspect.
The 16th C Salons have always had two underlying themes:
- Look at all the fun stuff the 16th C has to offer!
- The 16th C: It's not just about the clothes.
Kinda a marketing pitch, both for the 16th C and for the notion that we can do fun stuff at events that's actually period, rather than just wear historical clothes. :-)
**Like I said earlier, I really want this to be a day-long Party with Activities (um, really steath classes, but in a format that does not evoke "classroom", but, rather "fun stuff folks are doing".) The party would continue while those who want to can participate in the Activity. :-)

Date: 2009-07-15 04:14 pm (UTC)You know us costume geeks are AAAALLLL ABOUT THE COSTUME CHANGE. :)
*ahem*
But really, the 16th c. isn't all about the clothes. No. Not at all. Really. I can quit any time.

Date: 2009-07-15 05:43 pm (UTC)here's an idea
how about "hey, at 2pm or so, in the cooks ghetto, AM is going to be playing with 16th c. foodstuffs. come on by! be ready to play, or ready to taste, whatever!" and me (and Juana, and Vittoria and anyone else so inclined, can natter on interminably on all the fun geekery we have in our heads about the period and the evolution of northern european haute cuisine and the transitional cooking technologies, and how souring agents would vary from region to region and...

Networking!

Date: 2009-07-21 07:51 pm (UTC)I'm in for whatever you'd like. Finger foods throughout the day, some games, etc. I've mostly focused on the Italian, but I could throw in some Elizabethan nibbles as well.
Are you picturing a fully fleshed out play space with the space, decorations, games, etc. all fitting too? That sounds like so.much.fun!!
Re: Networking!
Date: 2009-07-21 09:07 pm (UTC)That's the idea. :-)
A little background:
Back in 2001 I started hosting 16th C "salons" (for lack of a better term). I'm a big fan of the 16th C, and there weren't many of us 16th C enthusiasts active in the Wesk Kindgom at the time, so, like I said above, part of the motivation was 16 C marketing ("look at all the cool stuff!") Another motivation grew out of my own personal boredom of the typical WK event (which tend to be Lists or Coronations). I wanted to do period fun stuff that was not just wearing costumes. Since I want to play at being a Courtier that was where I looked for activities. These 16th C 'salons' have continued through the years, although they've manifested differently depending on the circumstances. We've had everything from vaguely-period Venetian dress parties (the Girls Gone Wild At The Battle Of Lepanto Party held at the 2008 Prova Dura), to a Renaissance Courtiers Play At Being Gods and Goddesses salon (complete with flower-bedecked kiddie pool, 'cause it was Too Damn Hot at that event :-0 ), to more straight-up 16th C games/music perfomace/dance/Courtier-style group discussions.
Again, the idea is to create a 16th C upper class "playspace". No persona -- I am me all the time -- but doing things that would have been done for entertainment. It's a good education opportunity, too, but the goal is to have "activities" rather than "classes" -- a Party rather than a Classroom (but, oh look, over there they're teaching italic script so we can all write letters to our loved ones on the field" ; "Oh look, the cooks are all cooking and talking about 16th C food", "Look! They're playing games and they're teaching the games so I can play too". You get the idea. ;-)
Food, of course is an important component of any celebration of the 16th C. :-)
And, of course, all are welcome. People don't have to be dressed for the 16th C to come play (hey, it *is* marketing, to some degree ;-) ). And people *should* have an opportunity to try the 16th C out, even if they decide it's not their cup of tea. Plus I'd love to see other period-specific playspaces. You in An Tir already have that going on for Viking-era stuff (e.g. I was impressed with the Village of Beornvig (sp?)'s Thing.
Glad you are interested! Next year's War will be made of Awesome! :-)

Date: 2009-07-15 03:01 pm (UTC)let me please introduce myself...
Date: 2009-07-21 07:58 pm (UTC)I'm Raffaella di Contino, and was one of the people behind the Culinary Symposium last year. I'm mostly (hyper) focused on all aspects of life in 1570's Venice.
I've been experimenting with food in other locations as well when I'm asked to cook for others, so it dosen't have to be Venetian. :)
Nice to meet you in LJ Land!
Date: 2009-07-21 09:34 pm (UTC)Obviously, I'm something of a 16th C junke. Although this year I've taken up the 14th C as well, since that is what my sweetie wants to do and it turns out to be a pretty neat/interesting century as well.
I've been going to An Tir events because that's where my sweetie lives. Still have a lot to learn about you guys, but I'm trying. :-)

Date: 2009-07-21 09:41 pm (UTC)I try to get to the war (though I've missed the last couple), and if there was an enticing reason such as this, I'm sure I'd be that much more likely to get there.
Anyway, not quite sure how to help other than wanting to. I've been pretty much focused on late 16c mens clothing, but I'd really love to come and play.
I'll be at SOK too, BTW.

Date: 2009-07-21 11:45 pm (UTC)This sounds like FUN! I'm normally a 14th century gal, but I just happen to have some 16th century wardrobe for non-SCA activities. Complete with oh-so-useful apron. And HAT.
An Tir / West is on my calendar for next year!

And WooT! Glad that you'll join us next year!
My next two An Tir events will be Sport of Kings and the Emprise of the Black Lion in/near Seattle. Since I seem to be doing more 14th C in An Tir I'd love to meet another 14th C person up there. :-) (And I have a horse, which it looks like something we may also hav in common. :-) )

Cute little 16thC dressed baby should attract lots of people!! I may even be convinced to do a dyeing demo if the baby isn't too much to handle!
