Happy Year of the Ox!
Jan. 26th, 2009 02:35 pmDon't know what that's supposed to portend for the year, but it's fun to say. :-)
First off on this Monday, a Very Happy Birthday shout out to
valgards and
allergicorne! May all your dreams and plans come true for you this coming year. :-)
Second, this last Saturday was the Crosston Ball, one of my favorite events. Like I said before, I didn't have all my costume parts because I hadn't gotten them all back from An Tir yet. Couple that with just feeling like sewing and I almost didn't go. But
nightbocce insisted, and I'm glad she did. I took some pictures with my phone and I'll post them later.
Let me tell you what's so cool about the Crosston Ball. First off, all the music is live. We have a really talented group of musicians in this area. Next, the local SCA dance practices are very strong, and this event draws on those regulars and people from the historical dance community as well. There's a wide range of dances available, from simple pavanes, English Country, right up to complicated Italian stuff. Classes are taught in the day and the Ball is at night, but the attitude of everybody is just have fun and flirt and look like you know what you're doing (our dance regulars are very forgiving ;-) ).
This is also becoming a showcase event for our strong cadre of historical cooks. The food was super-good, followed by a great dessert spread, all documented.
Great music, great food, fun dancing, much smoozing with friends old and new, what's not to like? And you can come for the whole day or just the evening, so it doesn't feel like 'yet another SCA event that is eating my weekend'. And, finally, I love that this event shows that 'Courtly', historical-based pursuits in the SCA can be super-fun (i.e. it doesn't all have to be camping-event tourneys, folks! ;-) ). Congrats to all of you out there that put on a stellar event!
Third, I got some sewing done! Sunday, after my oh-so-early Brandee training ride and lesson, I sat down and sewed. I finished the partlet that I'd hoped to get done for 12th night (oh well...) *and* I made considerable progress on a 14th C-appropriate undershirt for J/S. It felt good to feel like I'd accomplished something sewing-wise.
Life isn't all skittles and beer, of course, but it could be worse. One day at a time...
