12th Night Mania!
Jan. 6th, 2009 10:29 pmOne 12th Night down, one to go. :-)
Had a great time at West Kingdom 12th Night. I took a bunch of pics on my cell to share with J/S throughout the day, and those are posted behind the cut below.
The site was a bit more than an hour south of San Jose, in Santa Nella. Not much there, but this old mission-style hotel. Drove down with
misagillian, who was also transporting Duchess Lao and Gideon from An Tir, who were attending West 12th Night for Kara's duchessing ceremony (their compatriot Duncan was riding with Gillian's husband
leohtulf). Nice to meet some more An Tir folks. :-)
My room was refurbished, so I did not have the problems that some people had in the older rooms. We (the SCA) had the entire hotel to ourselves. Add to that the open "plaza" feel of the place made this a pretty unusual 12th night (felt more like a regular event and less like SCACon). My biggest problem was that I had not planned on being outdoors so much and so did not pack anything warm. :-( To prevent freezing I picked up some wool from Pastiche -- instant wrap!
Most fun I've had at a 12th Night since I can remember. I was honored to speak at Rosie's Pelican ceremony. It was touching to watch Kara's duchessing. Enjoyed the part of the discussion of the Knightly Virtue of Largess that I was able to attend (thank you Etaine!). It was great to see all my old and new friends. :-) And I thought the Goldenstag Player's performance of (a very silly version of) Shakespeare's Pericles was very good -- nice that they've got an audience educated enough to appreciate such a thing. :-) Special thanks to Gillian, who paid for my 12th Night expenses as her Xmas gift to me (I *was* going to cancel, because I was stressed out about money). :-)
Here's my cell phone pics:
The site:

Yup, blue skies and palm trees -- pretty unusual for a Western 12th Night.
Breakfast with the peeps:

Sophie had been in New Orleans, so she got us all mardi gras beds and made custom necklaces. Here's Margurite, tricked out in Viking for Queen Catherine's court, wearing her crazy fleur/beed combo:

moriven, looking stylish:

Me and Sophie, waiting for the play to start:

One of my favorite bits of the play was when Vittoria came onstage with her 12 in. chopines and cresent-moon headress as Diana:

There seemed to be one major party in the evening, namely, the Darkwood party. Very different from normal, where people usually go to room parties. For whatever reason most everyone stayed in costume, another difference, since most people change into street clothes for the evening room parties here in the West.
For this party there was an amazing feat achieved: 2009 jello shots were made. It was quite the sight:

And now for my favorite photo. On the walls of the 2 feast rooms were hung all the devices of the Kings and Queens of the West, in chonological order. So I just *had* to get up on a chair and take this shot:

What can I say? I'm his biggest fan. :-)
moriven took some *fabulous* photos (like he does ;-) ); here's some links to my favorites:

On Friday I'll fly up to Portland, meet my sweetie, and then drive south to An Tir's 12th Night. Should be interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing 12th Night in another Kingdom; I've got a lot to learn about An Tir. I'm kind of afraid that I'll be a bit of an odd duck. :-/ And, of course, I can't help but be a little nervous about meeting more of J/S' friends. Oh well, turn about is fair play, and I've certainly inflicted my crowd on him ;-) .
But, on top of *really* looking forward to time with J/S (I got spoiled over Christmas), I *am* looking forward to meeting more An Tir folks. Maybe J/S and I can meet new people together (hey,
onerie, any help in this regard would be mightily appreciated :-) ).
And I *promise* that J/S and I will get out of our our hotel room and be social -- for a little while, at least. ;-)

Date: 2009-01-07 07:39 am (UTC)You know, I only have 2 decent dresses anymore (having sold or given away all the rest). I've *got* to get sewing!
And I'm *super sorry* you aren't going to make it. J/S and I have yet to thank you together, in person. :-)

Date: 2009-01-07 03:13 pm (UTC)this is assuming of course that you guys actually make it out of your room. just sayin. ;)
PS...interkingdom anthropology alert...folks stay in costume for the whole event including room parties as a general rule, tho they may lose a layer or two :)....
PPS...I dont know if they do this in the west but folks often make "door signs", ie a piece of paper or banner with their arms that they can tape to their door so folks can find them as they wander
looking forward to seeing you again :)
