G&S Fun :-)
Jul. 30th, 2006 09:23 amYesterday I went to SF to see a matinee of Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddygore, or The Witch's Curse put on by the Lamplighters. As with all the productions from these folks that I've seen, the performance and the production were very good. I didn't know anything about Ruddygore (it not being as well known as Penzance, or even The Gondoliers), but I found it really funny and enjoyable. My impression was that it was more of a showcase for male voices -- the baratone gets the girl! This makes sense to me, given that it's a spoof of gothic novels/popular culture of the late Victorian era. And the guy they have who sings base, once again, dominated the stage every time he was on. Madbaker made a great comment: that it was the first time he's ever seen the male lead in Ruddygore played like Alex in Coupling. :-) Now I'm looking forward to seeing next year's show. :-)
We didn't get to ride the carousel that's across the street because we were on somthing of schedual, and that was a bit disappointing. But dinner at Zarzuela was, as always, wonderful. I still feel too full! (It will be a lot of fruit, salad, and water for me today, that's for sure...)
Since I was coming off of a 3-day bender of a sinus/cluster headache I went home right after dinner and crashed. Oh, man, I was *miserable* on Friday! Poor misagillian, she had to suffer through me at the barn Friday, as I attempted in my haze to show her how to turn Brandee out. Misagillian has kindly offered to help out when I'm in England this October, and when Marguerite gets too pregnant to deal with Brandee. Thanks again misagillian!
I got to SF early yesterday, so I went to Britex and indulged myself. I've been thinking about the batiste that g0atface bought last year for her camica and I decided that I was jealous. ;-) So I got myself 5+ yards of swiss batiste (cotton). I also got one yard of a kinda eyelet cotton that looks enough like the white-worked partlets in the Moda book to me. Expensive, but there is stuff at Britex that you can not get anywhere else (that I know of, anyway.)
Today is Veil Day for HM. I'm making one for her in preparation for Pennsic, as are a number of other people. I don't know if I'll do it here or drop in on g0atface (Hi g0atface! :-) ). I'm really having trouble summoning any energy to get up and move this morning. :-P
Oh, and great progress has been made throughout the week on my Victorian chemise. There is one part of the Laughing Moon pattern instructions that I didn't like (or maybe didn't understand), so I did it my way and it was fine. Like any pattern, it helps to apply common sense when something just doesn't seem right. But it was a little thing, so I still recommend this pattern.
