Hoping for the best for A&S attendees
Jul. 22nd, 2006 08:41 amI really hope everybody who goes to A&S this weekend are OK; I worry that this heat is going to take a heavy toll on people. :-/
Non-sequitor: I heard a story on NPR this morning about these people that are making "original" Star Trek episodes and publishing them on the Internet. They got permission from Paramount to do this, and apparently the design quality is good. It warms my heart to hear about things like this. I think this sort of amature enthusiasm -- along with the SCA and other fandom-hobby-to-create-coolness -- is a triumph of both will and hope. Go them! Go us! :-)
I finished writing my report last night. Today I'm going back into work to do final edits and talk to my PM about finalizing the thing. I can't complain, really, because Livermore is supposed to get to 110, which would put a big strain on my A/C. My cats seem to like the heat, so they should be OK (I'll leave the A/C set to about 80).
Once I'm done at work I'm heading off to Marguerite's air conditioned house to help her paint and decorate. Obviously not the best weather for it but she's on a tight schedual. And my internal guilt button is just way to big to let a pregnant woman have to do all this stuff by herself.
If it cools off enough this evening I'll turn Brandee out; if not, well, I doubt she'll mind not moving much in this heat. I don't really *know* what's best for Brandee in this sort of heat; guess I'll have to ask for opinions at the barn.
I only rode once this week (Tuesday), and boy am I feeling it. My legs feel like they have lost muscle tone. Getting back on the horse (ha ha) on Monday it going to be a trial.
Sewing (which is a lot more fun for me to think about than work): Sewing for an hour here and an hour there this week has allowed me to make progress on the bath house babe shift. Got all the body seams flat-felled and made one shoulder strap.
I like how the venetian came together, but I have no idea when I'm ever going to wear it. It is a hot outfit, so probably can't use is for Mists Bardic. Hopefully it will cool off enough by Mists investiture to wear it. In a worst-case-scenario it would be an *OK* 12th Night dress. The pearl belt and headband I got from saffireandsage.com dresses it all up quite a bit.
I've been thinking about my list of sewing to-dos. My thinking right now is that I've got 2 linen cotehardies (thanks g0atface!) and my old stuff, so I'm covered for stuff to wear at (usually hot) tourneys. Which gives me a mental excuse to focus on all the stuff I really *want* to sew, that is impractical more "foofy", and will have *far* fewer chances of getting worn. But that's what excites me, so that's what I'm going to sew.
I'm probably going to start working on Dicken's Faire stuff next, starting with a chemise from Laughing Moon patterns. Since 19th C stuff is not generally my thing I don't have the sense of personal pride about making my own patterns, so I'm OK with using bought patterns for this ensamble. I've got to make everything: chemise, drawers
, corset, petticote, dress. I'm going for a 1849 fan front dress with skirt flounces out of the 30 yds of blue taffetta I got in SF last year.
I might try working in parellel on the simple-but-cool-fabric mid-16th C (of course) Florentine petticote that I think will be this year's 12 Night dress. I have a suspicion that the metal threads are going to be a bitch to sew, though. :-0
And sometime in the not-too-distant future I have to replace my farthingale (which, for you newer readers, was stolen).
It is debatable, of course, whether I can get these outfits done in time, given the glacial speed at which I sew. But it feels good to think about working off my sewing backlog.

Date: 2006-07-23 03:21 am (UTC)It's not quite as bad as the 104 degree affair last year, but it's close. Also, there are a few trees, a very close 7/11 for ice, and actual showers!
As for Star Trek, I saw one of the trailers a few weeks ago. Looks interesting. I think Walter Koenig's supposed to be in one, and I think one of TOS writers (DC Fontana? Don't remember) seemed interested.
