Costume Daydreams
Jul. 6th, 2006 11:28 pmSince work is failing to capture my imagination right now my thoughts are turning to sewing.
Hmm, 12th Night, Dickens Faire, Boy Clothes, oh my: I'm darned close to finishing the pink tourney venetian. My Mary Rose shoes were shipped this morning, so I'm going to wait until I have them before I get the hem marked and sewn. Sleeves are now to the point where I have to cut bias binding for the top edge and attach. Need to make thin loops for sleeve attachments, and sew on the sleeve top buttons.
People here on LJ have brought up Dickens Faire, and, as I've written before, I've always wanted to have an outfit for that. I have patterns for chemise and corset (from Laughing Moon), and I have 30 yds of dark blue silk taffeta that I'd like to make a fan-front gown out of.
But then there's 12th Night, and we all now how fast I sew :-P . I'll be damned if I don't have something to wear, though. I have the fabric to make a petticote and fitted overgown, a la the latest portrait found of Elenor of Toledo (BBC story; check out Relm of Venus for the link to the picture).
But I also have 6 yds of red and metal thread brocade that Marguerite bought me last Oct. Crown from Pastiche. I could make a one-layer Florentine gown, like the one semi of pearls uses as her icon sometimes. It would not be an "oh-wow-you-*did*-that-get-my-costume-laurel-card-punched" gown, but a "wow, that's amazing fabric" gown. But it would be easier and quicker to make, thus perhaps allowing me more time to *maybe* do the Dickens Faire outfit. But, damn, doing both would be really pushing it for me, and I don't know if it's realistic.
(Poor Ivar. Last year I thought I'd be making him Victorians, so I could get experiance with men's wear and tailoring, but with the theft this year became All About Me. I can be really selfish, I know... :-/ )
Oh, and then there's finishing what I started. I have an unfinished set of boy clothes gathering dust, and I *could* finish Brandee's barding for Purg. But I'm just not as enthusiastic about those projects.
Once again I wish I were independantly wealthy so I could just engage in my hobbies. Note to self: SUAD.
