Collegium was a very good event. I'm guessing there was about 50 people? 30? Not a huge turnout, but very good--goes along with my new mantra of "A small group of interested people is better than a large group of uninterested people." I took HRJ's Albs class, then baron_antonio's Political Thought class, lunch, Elenora's corded bodice class, than Elaine's Majolica class. All were very good and insprirational. This was one of those events that got me hopping up and down enthusiastically with how cool everything was. :-)
JIMR did the feast, with kitchen help from a bunch of folks, including madbaker's wife and wingedcorset. Good food, just enough. As goldenstag said in his journal the only improvement that could have helped the day would have been for the hall to have been a bit cooler. Cudos to threadwalker for putting together a great Collegium!

I drove up with goldenstag and aastg, so I spent the night at their place--we all crashed hard Saturday night. Sunday morning had a great breakfast (goldenstag had gathered intel on my eating habits ;-) ), and then I got to show them Stage Beauty, which I knew was right up their alley. I prefer this movie to Shakespeare in Love, which aastg mentioned had kinda-sorta similar themes. Then they showed me a very silly Kevin Klein movie, Soapdish, a silly send-up of soap operas from about 1991. Some great lines, and very big hair. ;-)

Left at about 2:00 so I'd have some time for chores. and I squeezed in some sewing on my pink tourney Venetian. Got the bodice pattern cut out and cut out the brocade and 2 layers of drill interlining that I'll be boning.

Work and riding has been keeping me busy during the week. I've got to find a equine dentist to check out Brandee's mouth. My trainer thinks Brandee *probably* needs a bit set done, and she also thinks the float didn't do enough. But finding a good dentist has been harder than I thought. I'm told there are more bad dentists than good out there. The one people like most does not travel, so you have to trailer to him, but I can't do that. Also need to order side reins and a new whip; side reins need to fit so I've got to call. I hate the bother, but it will help bunches with Brandee's canter transitions if we can use the side reins for training.

I'm enjoying the warmth. I feel like I'm baking out all the cold from this winter. On the down side, I'm once again faced with the fact that my love of 16th C clothes is unsuitable to out West Kingdom tourney season. The only thing one can function in (if you don't do well in the heat, like me) are ropas and other loose gowns. But at my age I appreciate wearing something more shaped, since I'm fighting off the middle-aged look as long as possible. Well, it will be cotehardies for me anyway much of this season because I want to help R&Y. But it does depress me that everything I get excited about sewing is not what I need. Another case where I get depressed about the SCA.

On the plus side of the SCA and 16th C stuff, I have had a number of people ask about whether we'll be doing the Salon again. My anwser is that I just organized it, I didn't actually *do* anything, and I don't want to burn people out (or even ask). I do want to support the Masque at 12th Night, to the extent I'm needed and can, so that's something. And Mari suggested at Collegium that there be some sort of Library/Salon event. (FYI: at Collegium a bunch of us brought books and set them out for people to look at. Mari served as head libraian, to make sure nobody did anything stupid. When Mari told my books were the most popular, I felt like I'd won something :-) ). And I chatted with a couple of the rapier folks (Thomas Logan, Else, and ?Kevin?) about putting together some sort of 16th C event in the indefinite future (next year?). Biggest issue as I see it is to find an air-conditioned hall that is cheap enough for a small group to afford. And to get on the calander. And to find a local group to sponsor the event (which was a problem that Thomas had run up against.) We'll see...

OK, enough musing, need to make money!

Did Thomas actually try to find a local group? I'm about to cancel the rapier event scheduled for August because we don't have anyone available to autocrat.

Ya know, I'm going to write Thomas right now (he's listed in the Page) and let him know this. Hmm, maybe I'll copy Else (who I think is the new KRM) and let her know too.

The Salon was great fun. Another one would be super.

Is there a way to mod the 16th c clothing you do to make it cooler?

Part of my problem is just simple body chemistry--I don't do well in the heat. Even when it's just linen (like my tried and true brown thing), close-fitting is just hotter than loose. And there's more layers, by default.

Another thought I had was to finish some boy clothes I've had sitting in a pile unfinished for years now. Have the shirt made. That might be a route to take, too.

Thanks for asking! And, who are you? :-)

I'm Aleit, aka Mini V.

I understand the layers thing, and the body chem as well. I tend to run slightly on the cooler side, and I get cold easily so while I'm not as peachy as I would be in Europe if I stay in the shade and hydrate I can manage fairly well. Kirtling up and pinning my skirts back helps loads as well, but I don't think your gorgeous clothing is really meant to do that.

Linen & Ropas

My brown linen roba tends to look "wilted" in the heat, but I made it through A&S last year at 104 with out dying - and I'm the heat wimp of all time! If only I could keep the linen from "wilting".

I don't think it looks wilted at all! But if you want it to drape less vertically, I suppose you could line it with a very light fabric, like cotton or linen organza. You'd still have the advantages of light/loose, but it would have a teense more body...

BTW, your shampoo/conditioner are still in our shower. We'll try to remember to bring to Investiture on Saturday ...
