Dr. Strangelove
Apr. 20th, 2006 11:25 pmOne of the things I'm loving about Netflix is that I'm getting to see films that are famous but that I've never seen. Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is such a movie. I've heard clips from it, and I knew a lot about the film, but I'd never actually seen it.
Watched Dr. Strangelove last night, after the barn (which I admit is strange timing). OMG, now I know why this film is so famous. I thought it would have been played broader, and that it's style wouldn't hold up to a viewer with today's sensibilites. I was wrong. This movie holds up 40+ years later. The tone is just right--very black satire that's funny but kinda underplayed in delivery (hmm, I suppose the correct term is deadpan). And Peter Sellers is amazing, going from the sypathetic British attache who's trying to deal with Ripper to the President(great American accent!) to the whacked-out Strangelove (who I remember Gerhardt parroting many times). I had thought the Slim Picken's character was supposed to be crazy, but no, he's just a guy doing his job no matter what. (According to IMDB, Picken's wasn't told this was a comedy, and so played the part straight. That works right up until the end--wonder what he thought of that...)
Anyway, if you haven't ever seen this movie I recommend it. Quite the piece of work, really.
