On current SCA/West Kingdom discussions I see going on:

- I see nothing wrong with the basic idea of advanced reservations for list field space. To me, it's still "first come, first serve", it's just done in advance.
-- The advantage of advance reservations is that it gives a chance for those who live far away from the site to get eric space.
-- The disadvantage is the potential fairness issue. If reservations are done by mail, and a whole bunch are delivered at once, who's to say which envelopes should be opened first?
But, still, I'm OK with the idea of preregistrion in general.

If we foster a culture where, if you are on the eric, you offer shade to the fighters to the list then that helps solve that problem for Crown/Coronet events. Of course, if people abuse hospitality you can always kick them out. But, heck, we all might meet new people this way. And most fighters aren't going to be fighting all day.

- Some offices need to be guarenteed list field space. Which offices these are needs to be a function of the purpose of the event. If the main purpose of the event is a Crown or Coronet list, then the offices that run that have to be guarenteed space. But, in general, I think we should try to keep the office space minimal so as to have as allow for as many "people" pavillions on the eric as possible, so as to keep the eric a vital, active event space.
-- Once the list is over perhalps these sunshades could be opened up for public socializing space. Protection of property might be an issue with this idea.
-- If the event is in a more public venue -- a fairgrounds, for example -- then IMHO the Chateline's tent ought to be on the eric too. I've had too many times when I wanted to point a newcomer in the Chateline's direction and had no idea where they were. It's worth the eric space at these sites, really.

- I think it is important to keep the A&S pavillion on the eric. Some people have written that having the A&S tent on a corner has worked well. But some sort of eric frontage is important to:
-- Not isolate the Arts from the rest of the event. There's always an undercurrent of Us vs Them/Fighters vs Artists (more or less pronounced, depending on the times) and this needs to be discouraged. Having the Arts publically given the same status as the lists by allowing it eric footage is a good step towards bridging this potential divide.
-- To facilitate participation in both fighting and arts for individuals who do both (and there are alot of these folks in the West!
-- To facilitate Queen attendance at the A&S pavillion. After all, these people are supposed to be the Queen of Love and *Beauty*, and the Arts promotes the expansion of Beauty throughout the kingdoom. Having the A&S pavillion have list field frontage allows the Queen to still pay attention to the lists while publically supporting the Arts.
-- There's been some writing on the creation of an Arts enclave. Not a bad idea, but the A&S pavillion should be the eric frontage for any such set-up.

- On the specific incident of October Crown, where to reserve eric space you must provide food and public space for the Kingdom Party.
--This is where I get off the bus. IMHO it's great to show Largess by having a big Kingdom party. Asking for the help of the Kingdom's people to donate food is also totally fine, because it allows more people to show thier Largess. But the minute you require generosity it takes the joy and the honor out of such gift giving. As someone else has said, now it's not largess, it's trade.
And I don't see the need, anyway. It will be early October in the south bay. The evening will be lovely, we can set the party up in the list field and have the royal pavillion be the anchor point of the party. If it is set up so that the party space is inviting (donated tables, benches, light, et al), then those who want to party can and those who want to retreat to more quiet time (bardic activities, for example) can do that too. Requiring people camping on the eric to be public space (and provide food!) during the party strikes me as unnecessarliy invasive, and will discourage hospitality rather than encourage it. :-/

JMHO, of course.
