-- What died in the car was the distributor. I should be able to pick the car up by COB tomorrow. $600+, not great, but could be much worse.

-- Spent much of Friday and Saturday painting the sunshade I bought last summer (it's never been set up). OK, what's really being painted are the 2 walls I bought for it. The design has red stripes, just like my bell, and the panels alternate between my Cross of Toulouse and J/S' red lion that holds a crown.
I had started this paint job back in November, and had put it aside for various reasons. But now I have a deadline -- AT/W War -- and when I got home Friday after all the car fu I decided it was a Divine Sign that I needed to start painting. ;-)
Got all the lions painted except for detail work. Here's what they look like so far:

-- Picked up my gold linen twill cotehardie and pattern from [livejournal.com profile] etaine_pommier today. I'm on the hook to do the finishing work. Many thanks to Etaine!

-- I must be distracted. I've had stress dreams 2 nights in a row, and when I got to the barn tonight (in Owen's van), I realized that I had forgotten my boots and half chaps. I hate riding in tennis shoes, but that's what I did.
:-/

-- Finally got around to watching Super Size Me. Wow. And it says a lot that it took 1 month for the guy to put on 24+ pounds, and something like 5 months to take it off. :-(

-- Right before I started writing this a raccoon peered around the corner at me, looked at me a moment, and then left. This is as I sat at my computer, mind you. The back door was open. He/She had eaten the cat food, washed up in Madeline's water bowl, and then I gather decided to see what the staff looks like. :-0 Must remember to keep back door closed...

Wow - I'd be really startled to see a raccoon walk through the house. And more than a little scared, too.

Is that a new badge for J/S? Don't recall seeing that before. Nice! I'm curious, is it approved? We tried to update Ulfred's arms with a crown for his dragon to hold, but the heralds said something like a charge can't be holding a charge, IIRC. (I'm not fluent in heraldese.)

And in regards to Super Size Me, for another viewpoint, you might enjoy watching Fat Head, by Tom Naughton. He does a good job of shooting down SSM, the math really doesn't add up. (I'm a low carber, and he supports low carb, just so you know. :-)

Awesome job painting. Cant wait to see it!
We're going to start painting one soon too, can I ask what type of paint you use?

Well, this is not the first time we've had a raccoon visitation. And then there was Invader Possom a while back. And my laconic reaction probably says something about me, as well...

Re the lion: J/S tells me that he was awarded an augmentation to his arms of a red lion (like the ones on the English arms -- regardant passant, or something?) holding a little 3-pt crown. He's been using the red lion as a household badge for a while, I gather. The gold claws and tongue are all my doing -- couldn't resist ;-) .
I'm sorry to hear that Ulfred has has problems. I dunno. I did try to find an "official" note about this augmentation online, but couldn't find it (I was also looking for a pic). Of course, if a get any flack I'm good at politely ignoring people. ;-)

More than you asked for...

Everything I learned about pavillion painting I learned from VC Yseult of Summerhall, Robert of Woodsend's lady. She's not very active in the SCA, but she's done A Lot of pavillions and she is an awesome consultant!

That said, I use the Liquitex Basics acrylic paint. I've sound that the stiff plastic (usually white) fabric brushes work best, and that the small angled brushes are a must. I make templets and trace them and color in the lines, rather than stencils. Stripes, of course, are the product of masking tape, but you still have to be careful to get a crisp edge.

The other big Lesson Learned I got from painting my pavillion was the necessity of making templates and laying them out on the tent before painting to make sure the scale is right. I found that only by seeing the design on the tent did I know it was right. My first design looked great on paper, but I sound it could not work when blown up full size.

Good luck! Yay for more painted pavillions!

Thanks! Thats all great (and very helpful) information!
One more question... Does the Liquitex Basics acrylic paint need to be "set" using anything, or does it just dry and become waterproof?
Ours won't be painted for June crown, but hopefully soon after!

Nope, it does not have to be set. It just has to dry. The stuff is really thick and gets mostly dry so that you can move the canvas around pretty quickly, but I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to paint the day before an event or anything.

My little bell has been rained on heavilly and it's been fine.

Oh, and if you want red get the Cadmium Red Deep Hue. And be resigned to it fading over time (especially the red -- I think I'll have to re-paint my bell this coming winter).

AAh! how did you know we'd be wanting RED- Lol! This information is perfect - thanks so much!
Looking forward to seeing you and "the man" at the war ;-)

"...heralds said something like a charge can't be holding a charge"

Wait a minute, if that were true then An Tir couldn't have the arms that it does, given that the An Tir lion is holding a laurel wreath. !

I may not be recalling what Ciaran said correctly, it was a couple years ago. Maybe Countess E. will check if I ask nicely. :-)
