Pluses:
- *Amazing* production design / costumes / effects
- Strong cast (touring company; Best of Broadway series in SF).
- Clever plot, with some very clever plot bits that link the 1939 MGM verion.

Minuses (IMHO, of course -- YMMV)
- The music all sounded pretty much the same to me. There was only 2 songs that, to me, sounded different enough for me to remember them (Popular, and Defying Gravity). The music was certainly enjoyable enough, though; I just won't be running out and buying the cast recording.

- The plot is clever, but the dislike/like/fight/forgiveness aspect is something that isn't supported; it's just something you're supposed to accept because it's a musical.

Overall an enjoyable evening. I'd go again (disregarding the cost issue) just to see the production stuff. Big Bonus: running into [livejournal.com profile] nightbocce who was there celebrating her birthday. :-)

Have you read the book? I'm trying to find out what folks think who read the book AND saw the musical.

I've read and seen both and IMHO - stick with the book. I think they changed to many things in the play (the ending for example!) and I greatly preferred the book.

The same author has written other books loosely based on popular morals tales. I read "Son of a Witch", the sequel but didn't care for it. My husband loved "Lost" but I couldn't get into it. This has reminded me that I wanted to pick up "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" though. I see a trip to the bookstore on my lunch break.

I liked how "SOW" ended, but generally agree "Wicked" was better. "Confessions" was great. I'm reading "Lion Among Men" now and it's okay, but no "Wicked."

No, I haven't read the book. I remember when it came out, but it didn't sound like my cup of tea, so I never picked up up (still doesn't, frankly).
