Baa -- SCA Meme
Apr. 11th, 2007 09:15 am1. What/when was your first event?
A local event out in Half Moon Bay, which at that time was Sunset Shire. I remeber Paul of B was there, he might even have been king. Year was 1977. And I still remeber what I wore (cringe...)
2. What was your first war?
I really don't remember. The only old war I remember going to was a West CAID was when Strider was king. Early 1980s sometime.
3. What is your favorite part of an event/war?
Events:Swanning around in my posh frock. ;-) OK, and getting to sit and talk to great people. Hopefully, more and more my favorite parts will be getting people to hang out with me and wallow in 16th C goodness. :-)
War: Um, there would be no favorite part. If you are me there is not point in going to wars. if I ever went it would be to support someone else (e.g. royalty, of a friend who had asked me to help with something specific.)
4. What A&S skill/talent do you have or wish you had?
I'm a pretty good costumer -- I think I've got a pretty good eye for that sort of thing. I don't have *any* graphic art skill and I can't write any sort of fiction. Music is something I sometimes wish I had more time for, but it obviously is not as high on my priorities as other things. I have, in the past, liked to sing, but I'm *way* out of practice. I miss singing, but don't have time for it or \
5. Why did you choose the elements of your Coat of Arms/device?
I changed my device, what, like 5 years ago now? I was looking for something that was simpler and do-able for me, and I saw the Cross of Toulouse and thought it was pretty. I told the herald (HRJ's bother) that I liked red and gold, and the Cross, and that I wanted something really simple. Turns out I could just counterchange Raymond of Toulouse's arms, so I did. Now my blazon is wonderfully short: Or, a Cross of Toulous gules. :-)
6. Favorite SCA song?
Honestly, I don't know that many. In general, what I call "SCA Pop" is not my cup of tea. I *am* very fond of To the West. I really dislike Fair Mistlands, but I'm a minority of one there.
7. Favorite garb?
I like most of the stuff I've made. I'm just a big fan of fancy-smancy 16th C stuff (duh). I get very excited when I see the cool stuff others are making -- very inspiring.
8. Best advice received/given?
Well, this was an experiace more than advice. At the A&S 2 years ago, when it was 104 degrees, I leaned from Cassie (acting as a medic) that water is not enough, and that I needed to also have electrolytes/Gatoraid. The heat had really gotten to me and I thought I had done all the right things, and I certainly had been drinking tons of water, but, no, I needed gatoraid. (I must have looked really bad...)
9. What is one thing you would like to change about the SCA?
Kingdom and Principality activites/events all revolve around fighting, and I wish that wasn't the case. I wish there was more room for more indoor events with indoor activities. But, heck, we do what we can, thus the 16th C Slackers Club, et al. ;-)
10. Why do you do this hobby?
It feels like family. I've never 'clicked' with people like I do with SCA folks. And I get to turn by obsessive tendencies towards doing something creative. And for whatever reason I *love* costuming, and over the years I've developed an obsession with the 16th C. Since in many ways I do not play well with others, the SCA provides a decent venue for those pursuits.
