Turgid SCA Drama
Jun. 27th, 2006 11:48 pmI spent a significant part of my day writing emails, Yahoo posts and LJ posts. The concatenated version:
-- Both Collett and Richard want to ride into their Laureling ceremonies. Rolf and Rory *really* want (determined, even) to have horses in their coronation.
-- Up until June Crown, the WK EQ community had no plans to have horses at Purg. This is because we have been screwed by that site EQ-wise too many times. Ellen, Kristin, and Collett have said that they would never be the EQ Autocrat of EQ MiC for that site ever again. Gwen, the KEO, is well aware of the problems.
-- The Tres Pinos site rules say no horses are allowed on the grass camping area.
-- The Purg autocrat did something to allow for horses at the site. (It is not clear whether she paid the extra site fee for horses, or if she activated the EQ insurance, or both). However, there was no communication between the autocrat and the KEO, so the EQ folks didn't know that the autocrat was trying to accomodate horse stuff, and the autocrat didn't know that no horse stuff was planned.
My good deed for the day was to try to get everybody on the same page. Now it's looking like there will be a push to do all the necessary SCA-required fu *and* to work with the site (again) to make it more horse-friendly. Bottom line, looking like the wheels are in motion and EQ stuff will happen at Purg. It may be, however, that coronation does not happen on the eric, but in the tree-y area by the stadium.
In Collett's case, however, it may all be a moot point. Poor Collett has to make a tough choice: If she has her ceremony at Purg she can probably have Tiera, but some people that are important to her will not be able to come. If she chooses Oct. Crown more people can come, and there is more time to make her nice ceremony clothes, but probably no Tiera.
Side note: I thought we as the WK EQ group had done a good job educating potential autocrats on what was required before a horse can set hoof down at an SCA event. You've got to have the special EQ insurance, there has to be a designated EQ Autocrat and an EQMiC, there has to be a local equine vet on call in case of emergencies, you have to have these stupid huge signs posted that say, in essence, Horses Can Kill You Don't Sue The SCA, and everybody that gets near a horse has to sign a special EQ waiver. And, of course, the site conditions have to be considered. People seem to know about the insurance, and are more aware of the site conditions, but have not twigged to the EQ Autocrat, EQMiC, and vet requirements.
If they ever get the autocrat's handbook done (and I've heard that there was one in the works), there needs to be special section entitiled 'So you want to have horses at your event'.
Sigh. I began my day by being really frustrated, but it may all be alright. I would like Collett to have the ceremony she wants, really!
