The Barn: Got out of the house pretty early by my standards, and got to the barn a bit before noon. Sunny but cold. It was a "Sometimes you just get on" day--i.e. Brandee and I would have had a better ride if I had lunged her first, but lunging was impractical so I just had to deal with it. Specifically, Brandee wanted to set the pace ("Woo Hoo, Let's go you silly human!") and I had to convince her that, no, I'm the human and *I* set the pace. We had this discussion for 15-20 min. At the walk. When I finally won out I got a pretty decent trot. My leg postion is getting better, and so steering with my hips and keeping her straight went better. Its all about blocking her shoulders with my outside thigh these days. But Brandee remained the little energizer bunny throughout the ride. Brandee's getting a training ride today, so I'm glad she's going to get a good workout.

Got out of the barn at about 1:30. I had to stop for lunch and run an errand, then stop by work and get changed. Didn't get to Rusty and Sarah's reception until after 3:00. Oh well, better late than never
:-/ . Nice chattage all round.

After the reception was the Dress to Excess Ball, where I had a lot more fun than I'd expected to have. Last year, you see, I was OK with the SCA dances, but was embarrasingly bad at anything else. What can I say, I don't know how to dance, and although the thought of learning appeals to me I don't take the time to learn. But this year the first part of the dance schedual was really do-able, and I had a super-good time with some of the dances. Add to my delight JT taking the time to explain waltz position to me, so turning was much better later on. Thanks and Yay! I'd like to do more of that, somehow. And I got to wear my beaded dress again, which is always a good thing. :-)

I also really enjoyed A) seeing cool non-SCA costumes, and B) watching people dance who really know what they are doing. I was particuarly taken with the couple who, JT tells me, are "known" in the dance community. She was wearing 18th C fop boy clothes, complete with make-up and wig (and a mole! :-) ), and he was wearing the Travolta Staying Alive outfit, complete with pimp platforms! (Hmm, the platforms didn't last too long I noticed...) Another woman had on this very silly Lizard Queen outfit which I was quite taken with--very silly.

On a related front, I've gotten so I can hardly wear real heels anymore. I'm fine in my riding boots, but anything higher and I don't last very long. I had my girl shoes on for about 2 hours when I had to call it quits and put flats on. I should invest in some dancing shoes; it would be worth it even if I do this sort of thing once or twice a year.

Many thanks to the folks who put together the reception and ball! Fun fun fun. :-)

Afterward. I was one of the first to leave. I had a feeling that I should get on the road before I got too tired, and that was the right choice. The drive home was wet, and 680/84 was kinda nasty. Opened the car door at home to find that I was Uncomfortably Cold. Decided I was too wired to sleep, so I watched HP and the Goblet of Fire, which I hadn't seen since I saw it in the theaters. I think it was better for me this second time.

Well, I should get going now. Have a good Sunday, folks!
