Long Time, No Update

I've been busy and so haven't had time to sit down and update this darn journal. Now I need a break from work so here goes:
Riding: Life is Good :-) . I was able to get out of the storage shed, which freed up enough money for a 1/2 lease on Jokie. I've written Deb the check, so now Jokie is mine to ride Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for the month of March. This also means that I'm responsible for Jokie on those days, including the very important responsibility of seeing that he gets his medicine. So I have to go out there on those days, despite bad weather, feeling crummy, or whatever. . Jokie is almost 30, after all. Good practice for horse-ownership.
I hope to still be able to ride Shammy, as well. Deb is going to check with his leasee if I can ride him in a lesson on Saturdays, at least until the trails open up. If that works, then I’ll be able to ride 4x/wk. Even at 3x/week I expect my riding to improve some faster. I need saddle-time to just practice implementing the stuff I’ve been taught.
Another good thing is that now I can practice my cantering more! I’m getting better, and I know that Jokie won’t run off with me. Heck, it’s a challenge just to keep him in the canter. I got some practice at Garrods last Thursday during our SCA lesson, and things went even better during my Friday lesson. Hopefully things will go even better tomorrow.
Riding related--Positive Thinking in an Ironic Age: Per a recommendation from the Confident Rider clinic, I’ve been reading a book called It’s Not Just About the Ribbons, by Jane Savoie. Her mental tricks I’m finding to be very helpful, but I can’t help comparing her Can Do attitude to the Oh, Whatever, self-deprecating approach to life that I and most of my friends have. I’ll have to write more about this book later. One thing is to think “as if” something is already true; e.g., “my hands are still and low”, “I am supple and relaxed”, “I love to canter”, or “I love to trail ride”.
Sewing: I’ve made a lot of progress on a bag-sleeve men’s houpalond that I was going to wear with the horses at March Crown. But now there’s no horses at Crown, so no hurry to finish (except to be able to cross it off my list).
Health: Maintaining. Hope to not get sick again.
Pop Culture: Very happy that Peter Jackson and crew finally got the recognition they deserved at the Oscars. Also glad the Master and Commander got some recognition as well.
After a long day at the Barn Saturday I went over to Falzalot’s to see Whale Rider. Worth seeing, if you haven’t already. But I confess my culture sensitivity was stretched to the breaking point—the grandfather is such a jerk!!! Its distracting how much of a jerk he is! So I was left thinking “If this guy represents this culture, than maybe this culture should go the way of the dodo. Don’t think the movie makers were going for that reaction, though. Good acting all-around (the little girl is amazing!), and the scenery is gorgeous.
